Kwan Brothers

I love it when my best friend, 'A', comes back to town, as we always go out and try new places to eat and drink and be silly (although my Amex does not enjoy it!).

We went on a Friday night to Kwan Brothers and it was absolutely bustling… kinda felt like I was in a hobo chic alley way somewhere in Asia. There was a 30 min wait to get in so they took my number and we went for a drink next door to Dutch Courage (might have to review this place another day).

When we got in we went straight to the cocktail menu and ordered Kwan’s Coco Loco ($25) (rum, coconut cream, kaffir lime leaf and black peppercorn syrup, pineapple and lime juice and coconut water) which is get this…served in a coconut. If you like Pina Coladas (and getting caught in the rain) you will absolutely love this, expensive but so worth the novelty.

Going loco for the Coco Loco
Just like in Asia the tables are shared and we quickly became chatty with our neighbours (Maltese Matt from Melbourne) if only just to have a peek to see what they ordered. Matt indecently overheard that I had to order G-Free and rightly called me a “Glutard” which is now my new favourite word.

As usual I say my wheat free spiel to the waitress, and she points out that pretty much everything is G-free on the menu. We proceed to order the salt and pepper squid ($14.90), crispy silken tofu ($11.90), wok tossed morning glory ($12.90) and pork belly skewers ($14.90). The menu was so awesome we may have over indulged in the amount of food that we ordered.

Deep fried goodness
(salt & pepper squid and crispy silken tofu)

In true Asian style the food came out at different time but relatively quickly. Everything was delicious and the salt and pepper squid was my fave. All you Glutards would know it’s hard to find deep fried stuff which isn’t battered with wheat flour, so it was a nice change to have some grease!  The tofu was just as delicious (deep fried as well). The pork belly was tender and served with grilled pineapple (which is A’s fruit of choice). The morning glory came with Chinese broccoli, garlic shoots and yellow beans, it was a little salty for me and probably not the best dish to have eaten before going out cause of all the garlic.

After we scoffed all that food down we continued drinking there cause we loved the music, they played old school R&B and lots of Beyonce (if only there was a dance floor). I forced A to have a Cheeky Shanghai Shot  (served in a cute tea cup) Jamaican rum, lemon juice, Demerara syrup and absinthe ($10).  As we stayed on, we had new neighbours who asked us to join them for a Punch Bowl and a Bacardi 151 (which was not a good idea at all!).

It’s a great place to go before for a night out on the town and when you’ve just gotten your pay cheque!

Oh My G-free rating – 8.5/10
